Originally from Jaworzno, Poland, Peter Staszel learned the art of crafting fine stringed instruments at the Technical College of Violin Making in Nowy Targ, Poland which he attended from 1962 to 1967. His most influential teachers were Franciszek Mardula and Jozef Bartoszek. After finishing his schooling, Peter worked in other fields – not making instrument making his vocation until he moved to Chicago in 1990 to join the workshop of William Harris Lee and Company.
Peter Staszel cellos are among the most sought after instruments being produced in the workshop of William Harris Lee. Their rich, clear tone and powerful projection make them a fixture in orchestras and conservatories around the world. More recently Peter Staszel has begun focusing his attention on the viola, and has quickly established his reputation in the viola community.
Peter has designed his own personal models based on patterns of Stradivari and other illustrious makers. He enjoys both the art and the craft of making instruments, and finds satisfaction in knowing that his instruments are in the hands of fine musicians the world over.
